Homemade chai latte

A warming classic with black tea and a blend of fresh spices such as cinnamon, cardamom and ginger - perfect for cosy hours.



Ingredients (for 2 cups):

  • 2 bags of black tea (or 2 tsp loose tea leaves)
  • 500 ml water
  • 250 ml milk (or plant-based alternative)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4 cardamom pods (lightly crushed)
  • 4 cloves
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds (optional)
  • 2-3 tbsp honey or brown sugar (to taste)

Preparation:

Boil the water and spices

Heat the water in a pan. Add the cinnamon stick, cardamom, cloves, ginger and fennel seeds. Simmer everything over a medium heat for 5-7 minutes to release the flavour of the spices

Add the tea

Add the tea bags or loose tea leaves to the pan and leave to infuse for a further 2-3 minutes.

Heat the milk

Heat the milk in a separate pan, but do not boil. Optionally, froth with a milk frother.

Mix

Strain the flavoured tea through a sieve to remove the spices. Mix with the hot milk.

Sweeten and serve

Sweeten with honey or brown sugar to taste. Pour into cups, garnish with a pinch of cinnamon and enjoy immediately.


Tip

For a more intense flavour, you can also add a pinch of nutmeg or a small vanilla pod.
